Why does allergic rhinitis cause cough?

An allergic trigger can make the nasal lining swollen and produce more mucus. Some mucus moves backwards rather than out through the nostrils. This postnasal drainage can cause a tickle, frequent throat clearing, a hoarse feeling, or coughing that is more noticeable after lying down.

Cough is a common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis. A cough has many possible causes, however, including viral infections, asthma, reflux, medicines, and chest conditions. The timing, associated nasal symptoms, and examination help a clinician work out the likely contributor.

Drinking fluids and using a saline nasal spray or rinse may help clear mucus from the nose. Limit exposure to a suspected trigger where practical, such as washing after outdoor pollen exposure or keeping pets out of the bedroom if dander is a concern.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise on treatments aimed at nasal allergy, because controlling the nose symptoms may reduce postnasal drainage. Avoid using cough products as a substitute for assessment if the cough is persistent or accompanied by breathing symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, blue or grey lips, confusion, or a severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face or throat. Arrange a clinical review for a cough that persists, disturbs sleep, follows choking, or occurs with wheeze, fever, unexplained weight loss, or worsening asthma symptoms.

Ask whether postnasal drainage, asthma, reflux, or another cause could be contributing to the cough. Explain whether it is dry or produces mucus, when it occurs, any wheeze or breathlessness, and which allergy or cough medicines you use.
