Why does adenomyosis cause heavy periods?

Heavy Periods is a common presentation of Adenomyosis. Tissue similar to the womb lining grows within the muscular wall of the womb. During a period, this tissue responds to hormonal changes, which can make the muscle swollen and tender. The altered muscle may contract less effectively, while the affected womb can have more bleeding from the lining.

Adenomyosis may also cause cramping, pelvic heaviness, pain during sex, or an enlarged tender womb. These symptoms overlap with other causes of heavy bleeding, so the symptom does not establish the diagnosis by itself.
