Why does acute bronchitis cause cough?

The bronchi are the larger passages that carry air into and out of the lungs. During acute bronchitis, their lining becomes irritated and may make extra mucus. Nerves in that lining react to the irritation, starting the cough reflex. The cough can be dry at first or bring up mucus later as the airways clear themselves.
