Why does acid reflux cause cough?

Refluxed material can irritate the upper food pipe and throat, which may set off a protective cough reflex. Some people notice heartburn or a sour taste, while others mainly report throat clearing, hoarseness, a sensation of a lump in the throat, or a cough at night.

Cough is a common presentation of Acid Reflux. A cough also has many respiratory and environmental causes, so it should not be assumed to come from reflux simply because it happens after eating.

Observe whether coughing follows particular meals, drinks, bending, or lying down. Smaller meals, avoiding late eating, and remaining upright after food may reduce reflux-related irritation for some people. Avoid smoke and vaping aerosols, which can make the throat and airways more sensitive.

A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether reflux treatment is appropriate. Bring a list of medicines, because some can aggravate reflux or cause cough as a side effect. Recording cough timing and nighttime waking can make the appointment more useful.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, coughing up blood, severe chest pain, confusion, or fainting. Arrange a review if the cough is persistent, disrupts sleep, comes with fever or wheeze, produces significant mucus, or occurs with trouble swallowing, unintended weight change, or repeated vomiting.

Ask whether the timing and associated symptoms fit reflux and what other cough causes need consideration. Mention allergy symptoms, wheeze, nasal congestion, sick contacts, and whether the cough began after a new medicine.
