What whooping cough is called

Clinicians may use “pertussis” in test results, vaccination records, and discussions about public health precautions. The name “whooping cough” comes from the sound that can follow a coughing fit when some people breathe in. That sound is not required for the illness to be considered: teenagers and adults may have a persistent, exhausting cough without it. Whooping cough commonly presents with cough, and bouts can end with gagging or vomiting.

Contact a clinician if coughing fits are becoming more frequent, disrupt sleep, or follow contact with someone diagnosed with pertussis. Give a clear account of the cough pattern, any fever, your vaccination history, and contact with babies. A clinician can decide whether testing is appropriate and whether antibiotic treatment may help reduce transmission. Avoid sharing cups and close face-to-face contact while you are awaiting advice.

Get urgent help for struggling to breathe, a change in lip or skin colour, severe weakness, chest pain, or repeated vomiting that prevents drinking. A coughing illness in a young baby needs prompt medical assessment, especially with poor feeding, pauses in breathing, or unusual drowsiness. Babies can become unwell quickly with respiratory infections.

Ask whether pertussis testing fits your symptoms, how long you should limit close contact, and whether household members need individual advice. If you are pregnant or regularly care for an infant, mention this during the consultation.
