Can whooping cough go away on its own?

Short answer
Whooping cough symptoms can ease with time, but medical assessment is needed because the infection can spread and may cause serious illness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why waiting it out is not enough
Pertussis, commonly called whooping cough, is a bacterial respiratory infection. The cough can continue after the early cold-like phase has passed because the airways remain irritated. Repeated coughing can interrupt sleep, trigger vomiting, and make it difficult to eat or drink comfortably.
Even when a person feels otherwise well between bouts, they may still need advice about transmission. Infants and people with certain health conditions can become unwell quickly, so exposure around them deserves early attention.
What to do instead
Speak with a clinician when whooping cough is possible. They can assess the timing and severity of the cough, decide whether testing is helpful, and explain whether antibiotics are appropriate. Antibiotics are not a substitute for assessment and should be taken exactly as prescribed.
Rest, regular fluids, and smaller meals can make coughing spells easier to manage when they are tolerated. Avoid smoke and other airway irritants. Ask specifically how to reduce contact risk for people in your household and when return to group settings is appropriate.
When to act urgently
Call emergency services or seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, bluish or grey colour around the lips or face, a seizure, loss of consciousness, or chest pain. Urgent assessment is also needed if a baby has breathing pauses, feeds poorly, or is unusually sleepy.
Prompt clinical advice is needed for worsening cough attacks, vomiting that prevents fluids staying down, fever with deterioration, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine or a dry mouth.
Questions that clarify the plan
Ask whether your symptoms and exposure history fit whooping cough, whether a test is appropriate, and how to recognise a complication. It is also reasonable to ask whether close contacts need their own assessment or preventive treatment.
Discuss your immunisation history and whether a household member is pregnant, very young, or has a condition affecting breathing. These details can change the safety plan.

Questions people ask
Will cough syrup cure whooping cough?
Cough medicines do not treat the underlying infection. A clinician can advise what is safe and whether other treatment is needed.
Can I see a clinician if the cough has already lasted a while?
Yes. The duration, severity, exposure history, and vulnerable close contacts are all useful to discuss.
