White spots on shoulders after sun exposure

Sun exposure can darken unaffected skin and make pre-existing pale areas stand out. Fine, pale patches with subtle scale may occur with a superficial yeast-related rash, while smooth sharply lighter patches can have other pigment causes. Dryness, past inflammation, or repeated rubbing can also alter colour. The shoulders are easy to overlook, so compare both sides and check whether the areas are scaly, itchy, expanding, or present elsewhere.

The spots are not diagnosed by colour alone. A clinician may examine scale and pigment under magnification and decide whether a skin scraping or another test is appropriate.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection, cover the shoulders when practical, and avoid tanning while the change is being assessed. Keep the skin dry after sweating, choose gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and do not scrub or peel the patches. Take a clear photograph in consistent lighting so you can track spread or change. If a clinician confirms a superficial fungal rash, use the recommended topical medicine as directed; colour can take time to look even after the surface problem settles.

Arrange a dermatology review if spots are rapidly spreading, sharply changing, inflamed, bleeding, painful, or associated with a new lump or persistent itch. Seek earlier advice when a pale patch appears in several body areas or the diagnosis is uncertain. Sun exposure itself does not prove the cause, and persistent pigment change deserves a proper look.

Ask whether the surface is scaly, whether a fungal test is useful, how long colour recovery may take, and which sunscreen or treatment fits your skin. Mention tanning, sweating, new products, and any similar patches in the family.
