White spots on legs in black skin

A flat pale mark may follow a healed scratch, bite, rash, or inflammation; the colour difference can be striking when surrounding skin contains more melanin. Dry, powdery scale suggests a surface problem, while smooth sharply defined patches may indicate a pigment disorder. Tiny spots around hair follicles can follow shaving, friction, or inflammation.

A diagnosis cannot be made from colour alone. Notice whether the spots are symmetrical, spreading, itchy, scaly, painful, or associated with hair or nail changes. Take photographs in consistent natural light so changes are easier to compare.

Moisturise dry skin, avoid harsh scrubbing, and protect exposed legs from sun so contrast does not increase. Pause new fragranced products and avoid picking bites or shaving over irritated skin. Do not use potent steroid or bleaching creams without a diagnosis; irritation can create further colour change, particularly in darker skin tones.

Arrange a dermatology review for new patches that enlarge, multiply, itch, scale, recur, or remain unexplained. Seek prompt care for painful warmth, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or swelling. Mention any recent rash, injury, medicine, or chemical exposure.
