White spots on the chest after sun exposure

Sun-darkened surrounding skin can make pre-existing pale areas stand out. Some spots are smooth and stable, while others have fine scale, mild itch or a sharp edge. Sweat, heat and an overgrowth of normal skin yeast can contribute to a scaly pattern on the chest. Irritation, healed inflammation and pigment-loss conditions can look similar, so a photograph alone cannot confirm the cause.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection and cover the chest when practical so surrounding skin does not darken further. Choose a gentle cleanser, rinse after sweating, and avoid scrubbing, bleaching creams or unprescribed steroid mixtures. Do not share antifungal or lightening treatment without a diagnosis. Note whether the areas are scaly, itchy, spreading or changing after sun exposure, and arrange a skin examination if they persist.

Book a review when spots spread, become inflamed, itch persistently, recur, or remain after the surrounding tan fades. Seek prompt care for pain, blistering, open skin, bleeding, a rapidly changing patch or involvement of the eyes or mouth. A clinician may inspect the scale and pigment pattern and decide whether testing is needed.
