White spots on the back after sun exposure

Sun exposure often darkens nearby skin, making areas with reduced pigment more visible. A recent sunburn, rash, or scratch can leave lighter color while the skin heals. Multiple pale patches on the upper back with fine scale or mild itch may fit a superficial fungal-pattern rash. Smooth, sharply outlined areas without scale can have other pigment causes. Because the back is hard to inspect, ask someone to help check the edges and surface, or use photographs taken in consistent light. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Use sunscreen on exposed skin, wear a shirt during strong sun, and avoid intentional tanning. Cleanse gently, moisturise if the surface is dry, and do not scratch or scrub the patches. Avoid borrowing prescription creams or applying steroid combinations without advice, since they can alter the appearance of some rashes. Note whether the areas change after the tan fades, whether scale returns, and whether new patches appear. A clinician can examine the back and select treatment for the specific pattern.

Arrange a review if patches spread, recur, remain clearly visible after surrounding skin returns to its usual color, or develop itch and scale. Seek prompt help for pain, blisters, open skin, pus, fever, or a rapidly changing area. A sharply pale patch involving hair or other body regions also warrants examination.

Ask whether sun contrast, post-inflammatory lightening, or a superficial infection best fits the pattern; whether a surface test is needed; and how long pigment changes may remain after treatment.
