White spots on the arm: possible causes and care

A flat pale mark after eczema, a bite, a scratch, or a burn may be post-inflammatory lightening. Fine scale or mild itch can point toward a superficial fungal rash, while a smooth patch with a clear border and no scale may reflect a pigment disorder. Spots around hair follicles may follow inflammation from shaving or friction. Compare both arms in natural light and check whether the skin feels different. The color alone cannot identify the cause, and darker surrounding skin can make a small change appear more dramatic.

Keep the area moisturised, wash with a mild cleanser, and pause fragranced products or aggressive exfoliation. Use sun protection because tanning nearby skin can make the spots more visible. Do not scratch or try to remove the color with home bleaching mixtures. Record the date, size, location, symptoms, and any new medication or cosmetic product. A clinician may inspect the surface with magnification and choose treatment based on whether scale, inflammation, or pigment loss is present.

Book an assessment if the spots continue to spread, recur, itch, scale, bleed, or appear after a new medicine. Prompt care is appropriate for pain, warmth, pus, blisters, fever, or a rapidly changing patch. A new sharply defined area that also affects hair or other body sites should be examined, even when it feels normal.
