What should you know about white spots newborn skin?

Tiny pearly white bumps, especially on the nose, cheeks, or chin, can be milia: small keratin-filled cysts that are common in newborns. Other rashes may look red around the bumps, appear in warm or covered areas, or come with irritation. The location, texture, and whether the spots are present at birth or appear later help a clinician distinguish them. A photograph can help track change, but newborn skin is best assessed in person when the pattern is unclear.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser when needed, then pat dry. Keep clothing loose and breathable, and avoid oils, scrubs, acne products, and squeezing. Do not puncture the bumps. If the baby is otherwise comfortable, feeding normally, and has no concerning symptoms, mention the spots at the next routine health visit or contact the baby’s clinician for tailored advice.

Contact a clinician promptly if the spots spread quickly, become swollen or pus-filled, or the baby develops fever, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, or seems significantly unwell. Seek urgent help for a purple or bruise-like rash that does not fade with gentle pressure, especially with illness. A newborn with blistering or extensive peeling also needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether the bumps fit milia or another newborn rash, which products should be avoided, and what changes in feeding, temperature, behaviour, or skin appearance should trigger a call.
