What should you know about white spots from tanning bed?

Indoor tanning can increase the contrast between normally pigmented skin and lighter patches. Fine scale or itch may point toward a superficial rash, while a flat patch without symptoms may reflect a pigment difference or an older mark. Redness, tenderness, blistering, or peeling suggests a burn or irritation rather than a simple colour contrast. A new spot should be judged by its evolution and surface, not by the tanning session alone.

Stop tanning-bed exposure and protect the area from further ultraviolet exposure with clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin. Moisturise gently if the skin feels dry, and do not peel, scrub, or pick. Avoid using lightening creams or steroid mixtures without a diagnosis. Photographing the area in consistent lighting can help you describe change at an appointment, but it does not replace an examination.

Arrange a skin assessment when a patch is new and enlarging, develops scale, changes colour or border, or remains after the surrounding tan fades. Seek prompt care for blistering, severe pain, open skin, pus, fever, or a mark that bleeds without a clear injury. Avoid further tanning while any concerning feature is present.
