What should you know about white phlegm cough?

Mucus helps trap particles and keep the breathing passages moist. It may look white, clear or cloudy when it is thickened by a viral illness, dry air, nasal drainage or airway irritation. A common cold and acute bronchitis can both include a cough with mucus. Allergic rhinitis may lead to mucus draining from the nose into the throat, which can trigger coughing.

Asthma can present with cough, chest tightness, wheeze or shortness of breath. Acid reflux can also trigger a cough, particularly when symptoms occur after meals or while lying down. The pattern of symptoms, not mucus colour by itself, guides assessment.

Drink fluids if you can do so safely, rest, and avoid smoke, vaping and other airway irritants. Warm drinks or a humidified environment may make throat irritation feel more manageable. Raise your head when resting if nasal drainage or reflux seems to worsen the cough. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before using cough medicines, especially for a child, during pregnancy or when you take regular medicines.

Note when the cough began, whether it follows exercise, meals or exposure to irritants, and whether you have fever, wheeze or breathlessness. This information can help a clinician decide what to examine or test.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, coughing up blood, severe dehydration or a marked worsening in your condition. Arrange medical assessment for a cough that persists, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, comes with wheeze, or occurs alongside unexplained weight loss, night sweats or fever. Infants, older adults and people with significant heart, lung or immune conditions may need earlier advice.

Ask whether the symptom pattern suggests nasal drainage, reflux, an airway condition or an infection, and whether you need a chest examination, inhaler review or testing. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines and any history of asthma or reflux.
