What should you know about a white lump on the neck?

The surface may be a blocked skin pore, cyst, inflamed follicle, or other skin change. A deeper lump may be an enlarged lymph node responding to infection, a thyroid-related swelling, or another mass. A neck lump can also be part of a head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer whose starting site is not yet known; these conditions require examination rather than visual diagnosis.

Note whether the lump is on the skin or beneath it, whether it is tender, and whether it changes in size. Do not squeeze or repeatedly press it, because this can irritate the area and make assessment harder.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the lump persists, grows, feels firm or fixed, or returns after settling. A clinician may examine your mouth, throat, skin, thyroid area, and lymph nodes, then decide whether imaging, blood tests, or a sample is appropriate. Bring a brief timeline, including when you first noticed it and any recent infection, dental problem, or skin injury.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange prompt medical review for a persistent lump with unexplained weight loss, night sweats, ongoing fever, voice change, or a sore throat that does not settle.

Ask whether the lump seems superficial or deeper, which features need follow-up, and whether an ultrasound or tissue sample would clarify it. If a thyroid cause is suspected, ask what testing is needed before considering thyroid removal surgery.
