White keloid: what to know

How the structures involved in Keloid Scars differ from normal

Short answer

A white keloid is a raised scar that may look pale as it matures, but a new or changing skin lump needs clinical assessment before treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical origin
Keloids can develop after acne, piercing, surgery, burns, or minor injury.
Treatment principle
The plan is selected for the scar's size, site, symptoms, and behavior.

Why a keloid may look white

Keloids are overgrown scars that extend beyond the original injury. They may follow acne, piercing, surgery, burns, or a minor injury. Color can change during scar maturation, and a pale surface does not by itself confirm that a lump is a keloid.

A clinician will consider the location, firmness, surface, growth pattern, symptoms, and history of injury. A skin lump that is painful, ulcerated, bleeding, or changing quickly may need a different evaluation. Avoid trying to cut, freeze, or puncture it yourself.

Treatment conversations

If the diagnosis is a keloid, options can include steroid injection into the skin, pressure or silicone-based scar care, selected laser approaches, cryotherapy, or surgery. Choice depends on the scar's size, site, thickness, symptoms, skin type, and whether it has returned after earlier treatment.

Surgery alone can be followed by another raised scar, so a dermatologist or surgeon may discuss a plan to reduce recurrence risk. Protect the area from friction and sun exposure, and do not apply strong acids or unprescribed steroid products.

When to seek medical care

Arrange an assessment for any new raised scar-like lump, especially if its origin is unclear. Seek prompt care for rapid enlargement, bleeding, an open sore, marked pain, warmth, pus, or a lump that interferes with movement.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the lesion is consistent with a keloid or another skin lump, which treatment fits its location, how skin color may respond, whether more than one treatment is likely, and how recurrence will be monitored.

Questions people ask

Can a keloid become white?

A keloid can change color as it matures, including becoming paler, but color change alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

Is removing a keloid always enough?

No. A clinician may pair removal with another strategy because keloid tissue can grow again after surgery.
