White Folliculitis: Understanding Small White Bumps

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. Shaving, waxing, tight clothing, sweat, friction, or occlusive products can irritate follicles. Bacteria or yeast can also contribute, and the treatment depends on the cause. Ingrown hairs may produce a single bump where a hair curls back into the skin. White heads can resemble ordinary pimples, while itchy scalp bumps may have a different trigger. The number of bumps, their location, and whether they are painful or itchy help guide an examination.

Pause shaving or waxing over the affected area, avoid tight clothing, and shower after heavy sweating. Wash gently, keep towels and razors personal, and do not squeeze or scratch the bumps. A warm, clean compress may soothe tenderness. Do not start leftover antibiotics or share prescription products. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy or another treatment after considering whether bacteria, yeast, irritation, or ingrown hairs are involved.

Arrange medical care if bumps are spreading, recurring, painful, draining, or leaving marks, or if home measures do not settle them. Seek prompt attention for rapidly expanding redness, severe pain, fever, or feeling unwell. Larger tender areas may need different management from small surface bumps, and an examination helps prevent unsuitable treatment.

Ask whether the bumps are folliculitis, ingrown hairs, or another type of skin bump; whether a swab is needed; which hair-removal method is safest; and whether topical or oral treatment is appropriate.
