White head on the eyelid: could it be a stye?

A stye is a tender, localised bump that develops when a gland near an eyelash or within the eyelid becomes blocked and inflamed. It may have a white or yellow tip, feel sore when blinking, and make a small part of the lid look red or swollen. A bump deeper in the eyelid can be less painful and may not show a visible head.

A white area in or around the eye is not always a stye. Discharge, widespread redness, allergy, a surface injury, or another eyelid problem can look similar, especially if the eye itself is affected.

Hold a clean warm compress against the closed eyelid for several minutes, then gently clean the lid margin with clean water. Repeat this during the day if comfortable. Wash your hands before touching the area and avoid sharing towels, eye make-up, or contact lenses.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or try to remove the white tip. Avoid eye make-up and contact lenses until the lid has settled. If you wear lenses, use glasses while the eye is irritated and follow the lens-care advice you were given.

Seek urgent eye assessment if you have reduced or altered vision, severe eye pain, pain when moving the eye, marked sensitivity to light, fever, or swelling that is spreading around the eye. These features need examination because they are not typical of a simple localised stye.

Book a GP consultation if the bump keeps returning, is not settling, becomes very painful, or you are unsure whether the problem is in the eyelid or the eye itself.

Ask whether the bump is a stye or another eyelid condition, whether you should pause contact lens use, and what changes would mean you need an eye specialist. Tell the clinician about recurrent lid problems, skin conditions, and any new eye drops.
