White or cloudy substance in urine

The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Notice whether the cloudiness is throughout the urine or settles as particles, and whether there is an unusual smell, burning, urgency, or lower abdominal discomfort.

Not drinking enough fluid can make urine darker and more concentrated, which may make sediment easier to see. Mucus or discharge can also mix with the urine sample, particularly when it is collected from the toilet rather than midstream.

A urinary tract infection can cause cloudy urine alongside pain when passing urine, a frequent urge to pass urine, or discomfort low in the abdomen. Fever, flank pain, nausea, or feeling unwell can point to an infection needing prompt assessment.

Drink water regularly unless a clinician has advised a fluid limit. If possible, provide a clean-catch midstream urine sample: clean the area first, begin urinating, then collect the sample without touching the container inside.

Arrange a clinical review if the change does not clear, returns repeatedly, or comes with urinary symptoms. A urine test can look for infection, blood, protein, crystals, and other clues; treatment depends on the finding rather than the colour alone.

Seek same-day medical advice for fever, pain in the back or side below the ribs, vomiting, visible blood in urine, or marked weakness. These symptoms can occur with a kidney infection and should not be managed by simply increasing fluids.

Children, pregnant people, and people with kidney disease should contact a clinician promptly about new urinary symptoms, even when the urine change seems mild.
