White burn marks on skin

A superficial injury or strong irritation can temporarily alter pigment production, leaving a lighter patch after redness settles. A deeper burn may change texture as it heals, making the area look pale, shiny, or tight. Burning, itching, scaling, or a rash around the mark may suggest ongoing irritation such as contact dermatitis. Facial flushing and sensitivity can occur with rosacea, while a painful band of blisters followed by pale or darker healing skin can occur with shingles. The timing of the burn, texture, symptoms, and exact shape all matter.

Keep the area clean and moisturised with a bland, fragrance-free product, and protect it from sun exposure with clothing or suitable sunscreen once the surface has healed. Do not peel crusts, apply bleaching products, or use strong acids on recently injured skin. Stop any product that causes burning and keep a note of what touched the area before the change appeared. A clinician can distinguish pigment change from a scar or active dermatitis and recommend treatment only after examining the skin.

Seek prompt medical care for a fresh burn with extensive blistering, white or numb skin, severe pain, chemical exposure, or involvement of the eyes, face, hands, genitals, or a major joint. Arrange assessment if a mark spreads, becomes raised or tight, develops drainage, or is accompanied by fever. A painful one-sided blistering rash needs urgent attention because shingles treatment is time-sensitive.

Ask whether the colour change is post-burn pigment loss, a scar, or an active rash. Ask which moisturiser and sun protection are suitable, whether the area needs follow-up, and which symptoms would signal infection or a reaction.
