What should you know about whirlpool folliculitis?

The rash may develop after using a whirlpool, hot tub, spa pool, or warm pool where water treatment or circulation is inadequate. Small red bumps or pus-filled spots often cluster under a swimsuit or on areas that stayed wet. It may itch, sting, or feel tender. Skin bumps and pimples can look similar, so the timing after water exposure is useful information. This condition is a form of folliculitis, not proof that every bump is an infection.

Shower with clean water after swimming, change out of wet swimwear, and wash the swimsuit before wearing it again. Avoid squeezing the spots or sharing towels, and pause further hot-tub exposure until the rash has settled and the facility has checked its water care. A clinician may recommend observation or a treatment such as topical antibiotic therapy; antibiotics for skin infection are not appropriate for every rash and should be selected after assessment.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, painful, draining, recurrent, or not improving after basic care. Seek prompt help for fever, chills, marked swelling, red streaks, or feeling unwell. People with weakened immunity, extensive skin disease, or significant medical conditions should seek advice earlier.

Tell the clinician when the exposure occurred, which body areas were covered, whether anyone else became unwell, and what products or treatments you have already used.
