Shingles is a reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. It commonly produces pain, tingling, or sensitivity followed by a stripe or patch of skin blisters, usually on one side of the body. A clinician can compare the rash with other causes and decide whether antiviral therapy is appropriate.

The affected area changes the urgency. Rash near the eye, facial weakness, hearing symptoms, or severe nerve pain may require prompt specialist assessment rather than routine skin care alone.

Contact a GP promptly when shingles is suspected, particularly if pain or blisters have just appeared. Keep the rash clean and covered, avoid scratching, and avoid direct contact between the blisters and people who have not had chickenpox or vaccination until the lesions have crusted.
