Which specialist treats heart failure?

A cardiologist assesses how the heart is pumping, reviews symptoms and previous heart problems, and selects treatment. Care may also involve a heart-failure nurse, pharmacist, dietitian, or kidney specialist because medicines and fluid balance need regular review. A GP may be the first clinician to assess breathlessness, tiredness, cough, palpitations, or swollen ankles and arrange appropriate testing.

Book a GP or cardiology appointment if heart failure is suspected or symptoms are changing. Bring a list of medicines, home readings if you take them, and details about breathlessness, sleep, activity, and swelling. Do not stop prescribed heart medicines suddenly. Ask which tests are needed, how often weight and kidney function should be checked, and who to contact between appointments.
