Which specialist treats dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it replaces. A clinician checks symptoms, pulse, blood pressure, alertness, urine output and the likely reason for fluid loss. Fatigue, generalised weakness, headache and muscle cramps can occur, but the pattern and examination matter more than one symptom alone.

Treatment may involve frequent oral fluids when the person is alert and able to drink. A hospital team may use fluids through a vein when dehydration is severe, swallowing is unsafe, or vomiting prevents drinking. The clinician also looks for causes such as diarrhoea, heat exposure, medicines or a urinary tract infection.

Arrange a GP assessment if thirst, reduced urination, dizziness, weakness or dark urine continues, or if the cause is unclear. Sip fluids regularly and follow medical advice about oral rehydration. Do not force drinks if the person is drowsy, choking or repeatedly vomiting. Bring a list of medicines and describe recent fluid losses.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, extreme drowsiness, very little or no urine, rapid breathing, inability to keep fluids down, severe weakness, or signs of shock. Babies, older adults and people with significant medical conditions can worsen quickly, so obtain advice promptly when dehydration is suspected.

Ask what is causing the fluid loss, whether urine or blood tests are needed, which drinks are suitable, and how much to take safely. Ask which changes mean you should return urgently and whether a urinary symptom needs assessment for infection.
