How whole-body weakness may feel

Generalised weakness is a reduced sense of strength or energy affecting the whole body rather than one specific muscle group.

You may feel heavy-limbed, struggle with usual tasks, tire quickly, or need more rest after activity. This differs from focal weakness, such as a suddenly drooping face or one arm that will not lift normally. Weakness can occur with fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, muscle aches, poor appetite, or trouble concentrating, and the combination of symptoms matters.

Get emergency help for sudden weakness

Call emergency services for sudden weakness on one side, facial drooping, new speech difficulty, severe chest pain, severe shortness of breath, collapse, confusion, or inability to stay awake. Seek urgent assessment for weakness with a high fever, shaking, a new widespread rash, persistent vomiting, black stools, or rapidly worsening illness. People using insulin should check their glucose if possible when weakness develops with sweating, shaking, or confusion.

A range of contributors is possible

Poor sleep, missed meals, infection, medicine effects, dehydration, and prolonged inactivity can leave someone feeling weak. Clinicians may also assess blood, hormone, nutrient, glucose, or serious infection-related causes. The following conditions are alphabetical examples, not a ranking of what is causing your weakness.

Finding the reason

Assessment starts with when the weakness began, whether it fluctuates, recent illness, food and fluid intake, sleep, medicines, bleeding, and any change in mood or activity. Examination may include pulse, blood pressure, temperature, hydration, heart and lungs, nerves, and muscle strength. A clinician may order blood tests, urine testing, or other investigations based on these findings.

Treatment follows the diagnosis

Replacing fluids, treating an infection, correcting low blood glucose, or adjusting a medicine may help when those are the cause. Anaemia treatment depends on its type and source; iron or vitamin B12 treatment should follow assessment rather than self-treatment. Thyroid problems and diabetes need an individual management plan. Rest can support recovery, but persistent weakness still deserves evaluation.

Supporting day-to-day resilience

Eat regular balanced meals, drink enough to keep urine a pale colour unless you have been given a fluid limit, and build activity back gradually after illness. Take prescribed medicines as directed and do not skip meals when using glucose-lowering treatment. Attend follow-up for known anaemia, thyroid disease, diabetes, or nutrient deficiency so treatment can be adjusted safely.

Symptoms that add useful context

Report fever, weight change, excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, breathlessness, palpitations, tingling, numbness, muscle pain, dark urine, bleeding, or changes in bowel habits. Describe any one-sided weakness separately, including when it started, because that needs a different level of urgency.

What can happen without assessment

Weakness can increase the risk of falls, reduce independence, and make it difficult to drink, eat, or take medicines. When there is an untreated nutrient deficiency, blood problem, glucose disturbance, or infection, care directed at the cause can prevent symptoms from becoming more disruptive.

Questions people ask

Is weakness the same as fatigue?

They can overlap. Fatigue is a feeling of low energy, while weakness can mean reduced ability to generate strength; both need context.

Can dehydration cause weakness?

Yes. Fluid loss can affect circulation and cause thirst, dizziness, low urine output, and weakness.
