Which specialist treats allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis causes inflammation inside the nose after exposure to a trigger such as pollen, dust or animal dander. An allergist can look for triggers and consider allergy testing when symptoms are persistent or difficult to control. An ear, nose and throat specialist can assess nasal blockage, reduced smell, recurrent nosebleeds or structural problems that may be adding to the symptoms. A GP can review your history, examine your nose and eyes, and coordinate referral.

Common accompanying problems include a runny nose, itchy eyes, postnasal drip and an itchy throat. Cough or headache may occur when drainage or congestion affects sleep and comfort.

Book a GP appointment if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, interfere with work or school, or do not settle with the plan you have been given. Note where you were, what you were exposed to, the season, and whether symptoms followed a medicine or food. Bring a list of treatments and any nasal sprays you use; technique and regular use can affect the result.

The clinician may recommend trigger avoidance, saline rinsing or medicine for the nose and eyes. Do not start repeated courses of treatment without checking whether the diagnosis or approach needs review.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange prompt review for one-sided persistent blockage, repeated nosebleeds, fever with facial pain, or a lasting loss of smell. These features need assessment rather than being assumed to be allergy.
