Transvaginal ultrasound uses a slim covered probe placed gently inside the vagina to create images of the uterus, cervix, ovaries and nearby pelvic structures. The person carrying out the examination explains the process, protects your privacy and records the images. A radiologist or sonographer reviews what is seen; the final report is then sent to the clinician who arranged the test. The scan itself does not provide a complete diagnosis for every pelvic concern, so your symptoms and medical history still matter.

When booking, ask whether you need an empty bladder and tell the clinic if you could be pregnant, have pelvic pain, or have concerns about internal examinations. You can ask for the steps to be explained before starting and tell the operator to pause if you feel pain or distress. Bring details of medicines, previous scans and the reason for the referral. Your gynaecologist can explain how the report fits with your care plan.

Contact a clinician promptly for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fainting, fever, or unusual discharge. These symptoms need clinical assessment and should not be judged from the ultrasound appointment alone. Seek urgent help if pain is sudden and severe, you feel very unwell, or you may be pregnant and have bleeding or one-sided pain.
