Which specialist performs nuchal translucency scan?

Nuchal translucency scanning uses ultrasound to examine the fluid space at the back of the fetus’s neck during early pregnancy. The measurement is considered alongside gestational age and other screening information; it does not by itself diagnose a chromosome condition or another problem.

A maternal-fetal medicine specialist has advanced training in pregnancies that need detailed assessment. Depending on the clinic, a trained sonographer may obtain the images while the specialist reviews the findings and explains what they mean.

Ask your maternity team when the scan should occur and whether you need a referral. Bring details of your last menstrual period, estimated due date, previous ultrasound reports, and medicines. During the visit, confirm how you will receive the result and whether further screening or diagnostic testing may be offered.

Contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, significant abdominal pain, fever, or feeling faint during pregnancy. Seek urgent care for severe pain, heavy bleeding, collapse, or sudden breathing difficulty. These symptoms require clinical assessment and should not be explained by the timing of a screening scan.
