Which specialist performs an MRI scan?

The radiographer checks your identity, explains the scan, screens you for metal or implanted devices, and positions you on the scanner table. The MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images; it does not use X-rays. A radiologist is the specialist doctor who reviews the images and prepares a report for the clinician who requested the scan. Other staff may help with contrast, monitoring, or comfort during the appointment.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about food, drink, medicines, and contrast. Tell the team about a pacemaker, metal fragments, a cochlear implant, kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, or difficulty lying still. Remove jewellery and other metal items when asked. Wear comfortable clothing and mention anxiety or enclosed spaces early, because the team can discuss practical support before scanning begins.

Contact the imaging team promptly if you develop a rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe dizziness after contrast. Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. During the scan, use the call button if you feel unwell or distressed; you do not need to silently endure discomfort.

Ask who will perform and report your scan, whether contrast is planned, how long the appointment may take, and when the report will reach the clinician managing your care.
