Which specialist performs cystoscopy?

Short answer

A urologist usually performs cystoscopy because this specialist is trained to examine and treat the urinary tract.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the specialist does

During cystoscopy, the urologist guides a thin camera through the urethra into the bladder. The examination can help assess bleeding, urinary symptoms, repeated infections, or an area seen on another test. A flexible scope may be used in an outpatient setting; a more involved examination can be planned with pain control or sedation. The urologist reviews the reason for the test, explains preparation, and discusses what the camera shows afterward.

How to prepare

Follow the instructions from the urology team about drinking, eating, medicines, and whether a urine sample is needed. Tell them about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, pregnancy, urinary infections, and difficulty passing urine. Arrange transport if sedation is planned. Ask when you can return to normal activity and when results or any sample analysis will be available.

When to seek care

Mild burning or a small amount of blood can occur briefly after cystoscopy. Contact the care team promptly for fever, chills, worsening pain, heavy or persistent bleeding, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, or inability to pass urine. These symptoms need assessment because they may signal infection, irritation, or blockage.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which type of cystoscopy is planned, what discomfort control will be used, whether a tissue sample might be taken, and how findings will affect the next step.

Questions people ask

Can another doctor assist with cystoscopy?

A urologist leads the examination, while nurses, anaesthesia staff, or other clinicians may support preparation and monitoring.

Will cystoscopy always require hospital admission?

No. Many examinations are arranged as outpatient care, although sedation or a more complex procedure may change the setting.
