The specialist first examines the lump, its depth, its attachment to nearby tissue, and any signs of infection. They may determine whether it is an epidermoid cyst, another type of cyst, or a different skin growth. When removal is appropriate, the aim is to take out the cyst wall as well as its contents, because leaving the wall behind can allow the lump to return. A general surgeon may be involved when a cyst is unusually large, deep, located in a difficult area, or outside the skin specialist’s usual scope.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or attempt to drain the lump at home. Bring a list of medicines, allergies, and previous reactions to local anaesthetic. Tell the clinician whether the area has changed, drained, become tender, or been treated before. Ask whether the planned procedure is an office-based excision, whether the tissue will be sent for examination, and what wound care will involve. A calm, non-infected cyst may be assessed and scheduled for removal, while an inflamed one may need a different sequence of care.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if the lump becomes rapidly more painful, hot, red, swollen, or starts draining foul-smelling material. Seek urgent help if redness is spreading, you feel unwell, or swelling is affecting the eye, mouth, or ability to move a nearby joint. These features can indicate infection or pressure on surrounding structures; they do not establish what the lump is. A new, persistent, bleeding, or repeatedly returning growth also deserves a clinician’s examination.

Ask: What type of cyst do you suspect? Is removal recommended now or after inflammation settles? Will the entire cyst wall be removed? What scar, dressing, activity, and follow-up should I expect? What changes after the procedure should prompt a call?
