The plastic surgeon discusses reconstruction using an implant, your own tissue, or a staged approach. The choice can depend on your body, previous operations, planned cancer treatment, skin and tissue condition, and personal preferences. Reconstruction may be performed at the same time as breast removal or at a later stage.

The breast surgeon and plastic surgeon coordinate the timing of cancer treatment and reconstruction. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, wound healing, and other health conditions can affect the sequence. The team should explain expected changes in shape and sensation, scars, recovery, and possible further procedures.
