When should you worry about wheezing if you have bronchiolitis?

Short answer
Wheezing with bronchiolitis needs urgent assessment when breathing becomes laboured, feeding falls, or the child is unusually sleepy or difficult to wake.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Who is affected
- Bronchiolitis mainly affects infants and young children.
- Urgent signs
- Breathing pauses, blue lips, severe effort, poor drinking, or reduced responsiveness need urgent help.
What wheezing may mean
Wheezing is a very common presentation of Bronchiolitis. The small airways become swollen and filled with mucus, so an infant or young child may breathe noisily, cough, and work harder to move air. Symptoms can change over hours, and the effort of breathing may interfere with drinking.
Watch the child rather than relying only on the sound. Count wet nappies, notice how much the child drinks, and look for skin pulling between or below the ribs. Babies born early or children with heart, lung, or immune problems may need earlier advice when symptoms start.
What carers can do
Keep the child upright while awake and offer small, frequent feeds. Clear visible nasal mucus gently before feeds if advised locally, and keep the environment free from smoke. Do not give cough medicines or use someone else's inhaler unless a clinician has specifically prescribed it. Check breathing and responsiveness regularly, including during sleep.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pulling, grunting, collapse, or a child who is difficult to wake. Seek urgent medical assessment if breathing is persistently fast or hard, the child cannot drink enough, vomits repeatedly, or has markedly fewer wet nappies. Get prompt advice for a very young infant with worsening symptoms or any fever concern.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how to judge feeding and hydration, which breathing signs matter most, and how often to check the child overnight. Confirm where to seek care, whether follow-up is needed, and what to do if wheezing worsens after returning home.
