When should you worry about wheezing if you have allergic rhinitis?

Wheezing is a common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis. Allergy-related inflammation can irritate the nose and lower airways, while mucus and exposure to triggers may make breathing sound tight or musical. Wheezing can also occur with asthma, an infection, or a serious allergic reaction, so the sound alone cannot identify its cause.

Notice when it begins, whether it follows dust, pollen, mould, animals, or a medicine, and whether cough, chest tightness, or breathlessness occurs at the same time. A new symptom, repeated episodes, or wheezing that continues after nasal symptoms settle deserves a clinical assessment.

Move away from a suspected trigger and sit upright. Follow any personal asthma or allergy action plan exactly as prescribed; do not borrow another person's inhaler. Keep track of the timing, associated symptoms, and medicines used. A clinician may examine your chest, review nasal treatment, and decide whether breathing tests or an airway treatment is appropriate.

Call emergency services immediately for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking, rapidly worsening wheezing, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Seek same-day medical advice when wheezing is new, keeps returning, limits normal activity, follows a new medicine or food, or does not improve after your prescribed reliever plan. Children, older adults, and people with known lung disease should be assessed promptly when symptoms change.

Ask whether the wheeze could indicate asthma, how to identify your triggers, and whether your rhinitis treatment is controlling airway irritation. Clarify which symptoms require emergency action, how to use any prescribed inhaler, and when breathing tests or follow-up should happen.
