What vomiting can mean

Vomiting is a very common presentation of Rotavirus Infection. Repeated vomiting can make it difficult to replace water and salts, especially in babies, young children and older adults. Dry lips or mouth, unusual sleepiness, dizziness, very little urine, or no tears when crying can signal dehydration. Blood or green fluid in vomit, severe tummy pain, a swollen abdomen, or confusion needs prompt assessment because these features may point beyond an uncomplicated stomach infection.

What you can do now

Offer frequent small sips of oral rehydration solution rather than a large drink at once. If vomiting follows a sip, pause briefly and try again slowly. Continue breastfeeding, and ask a clinician about feeding an infant or giving medicines. Rest, wash hands carefully, and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Do not give anti-vomiting medicines to a child unless a healthcare professional has advised them.

When to seek care

Get emergency help if the person is difficult to wake, confused, faint, struggling to breathe, has a seizure, or cannot keep any fluid down. Seek same-day medical care for signs of dehydration, repeated vomiting that is not easing, blood or green vomit, severe abdominal pain, or concern about a very young child. Contact a clinician sooner if the person has a long-term illness or is unable to drink safely.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which rehydration product and amount are suitable, how to monitor urine and alertness, when normal food can resume, and whether any prescribed medicines should be continued during vomiting.
