When to worry about vomiting with meningitis

Vomiting is a common presentation of Meningitis. Meningitis can irritate the tissues around the brain and spinal cord, producing headache, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Vomiting may also lead to dehydration, which can worsen weakness and dizziness. A person can become seriously unwell quickly, and the full pattern of symptoms is more useful than vomiting alone.

If meningitis is suspected or already diagnosed, contact emergency services or go to an emergency department. Do not drive if confusion, severe weakness, faintness, or vision problems are present. Keep the person resting on their side if they may vomit again. Offer only small sips if they are fully awake and can swallow safely; do not force food or drink.

Seek emergency help immediately for a severe or rapidly worsening headache, a stiff neck, confusion, difficulty waking, a seizure, breathing trouble, fainting, new weakness, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Repeated vomiting or inability to keep fluids down also needs urgent assessment, particularly with fever or worsening drowsiness.

Ask which symptoms should trigger an emergency call, whether prescribed medicines can be kept down, how dehydration will be monitored, and whether close contacts need medical advice.
