When to worry about vaginal itching with trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is an infection passed through sexual contact. It can cause itching, burning, soreness, discomfort when passing urine, or discharge that looks or smells different. Some people have few or no symptoms. Because other infections can look similar, testing helps identify the cause and guides treatment.

Arrange a sexual health or medical appointment for testing and treatment advice. Avoid sex until you and any relevant partner or partners have completed the advised treatment and a clinician says it is appropriate to resume. Do not share prescription medicine or rely on an over-the-counter thrush product. Use unscented products and avoid douching while the skin is irritated.

Seek prompt advice for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, unusual bleeding, painful urination, sores, or symptoms during pregnancy. Urgent care is needed for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or feeling seriously unwell. Return for review if symptoms continue after treatment, since another infection or reinfection may need consideration.
