Short answer

Most people with Hallux Rigidus notice toe pain, but rapidly worsening pain, marked swelling, injury, skin changes, or inability to walk should be assessed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Pain with big-toe bend during walking
Arrange review
Stiffness affecting gait or footwear
Urgent warning
Hot swelling with fever or colour change

Why hallux rigidus hurts

Hallux rigidus affects movement at the big toe joint. Pain and stiffness may be most noticeable when the toe bends during walking, climbing stairs, or pushing off. A bump on top of the joint can rub against shoes. Symptoms that gradually restrict motion may reflect the condition becoming more limiting, while sudden severe pain after a twist or impact may indicate another injury. Warmth, spreading redness, or feeling unwell should not be dismissed as stiffness.

Ways to reduce strain

Wear shoes with enough room at the front and a sole that does not force the big toe to bend sharply. Temporarily reduce activities that repeatedly load the joint, while keeping movement gentle and comfortable. Do not force the toe through a painful range or try to remove a joint bump at home. A clinician can assess footwear, exercises, pain relief, orthotics, and other treatment choices based on movement and daily function.

When to seek care

Arrange review when stiffness or pain changes your walking pattern, limits shoes, interrupts sleep, or keeps returning despite sensible activity changes. Seek prompt care after an injury if the toe is deformed, suddenly swollen, or difficult to move. Obtain urgent help for a hot, red, rapidly swollen joint with fever, or for a toe that becomes cold, blue, pale, or numb.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how much joint movement remains, whether footwear or an orthotic could reduce pressure, and which exercises are safe. Ask how to tell a gradual flare from injury or infection, and what symptoms should lead you to seek urgent assessment.
