When to worry about skin swelling with cellulitis

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection affecting deeper layers of skin. Swelling may occur with redness, warmth, tenderness, and skin that looks stretched or shiny. The affected area can expand, and nearby lymph nodes may become tender. A wound, crack, bite, ulcer, or surgical opening can provide an entry point, but the cause is not always obvious from the skin alone.

Arrange medical assessment rather than trying to squeeze, drain, or cut the swollen area. Keep the skin clean and covered if there is an open wound, elevate a swollen arm or leg when comfortable, and mark the edge of redness with a pen so changes are easier to notice. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not share leftover antibiotics.

Seek same-day medical care when swelling is new and painful, redness is spreading, the area is hot, or you have fever or chills. Get emergency help for confusion, faintness, rapid breathing, severe weakness, purple or black skin, severe pain that seems out of proportion, or swelling around the eye with vision changes. Extra caution is needed with diabetes, poor circulation, immune problems, or a recent operation.

Ask whether the infection needs prescription treatment, how to monitor the border of redness, which changes suggest it is worsening, and when a follow-up review should happen.
