Wheezing when inhaling: what to know

A high-pitched sound on breathing in can arise higher in the airway, while chest wheeze can occur as air moves through narrowed smaller tubes. Asthma, acute bronchitis, COPD, and bronchiolitis can produce noisy breathing, although the timing of the sound alone cannot identify the cause. Allergic rhinitis may add upper-airway congestion. Anaphylaxis can cause sudden breathing difficulty with swelling, hives, vomiting, dizziness, or a tight throat.

Try to notice whether the noise is present at rest, after exercise, during a cold, or after food, medicine, an insect sting, smoke, or another exposure. Do not force deep breaths to test it if breathing feels difficult.

Stop exertion, sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and move away from smoke or the suspected trigger. Use only medication prescribed for you and follow its instructions. A clinician may examine your throat and chest, measure oxygen, and arrange breathing tests or treatment such as a nebuliser treatment when appropriate.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden inhalation noise with throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, faintness, blue lips, severe breathlessness, confusion, or inability to speak normally. Seek same-day medical care for new or persistent wheezing, noisy breathing at rest, chest pain, fever, or worsening cough. Children with poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or visibly hard breathing need prompt assessment.
