Wheezing and anaphylaxis: what should you know?

Anaphylaxis is a rapid, serious allergic reaction that can narrow the airways. Wheezing may occur with difficult breathing, throat tightness, hoarse speech, facial or tongue swelling, hives, dizziness, vomiting, or collapse. Food allergy is one possible trigger, alongside medicines, insect stings, latex, or other exposures. Wheezing can also occur for reasons unrelated to allergy, so the surrounding symptoms and timing matter.

A person may not develop every warning sign, and skin changes can be absent. Sudden wheezing after a known or possible allergen should be treated as an emergency, especially when breathing or circulation is affected.

Call emergency services immediately and say that anaphylaxis is possible. If the person has a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector, use it according to its instructions without delay. Keep them lying down with legs raised if comfortable; allow them to sit with legs extended if breathing is easier, and do not let them stand or walk. If they are unconscious and not breathing normally, begin resuscitation if trained.
