What does IUI treat?

IUI may be considered for female infertility related to ovulation difficulties, male factor infertility involving sperm number or movement, or infertility with no clear explanation. It can also be used with donor sperm. The approach depends on whether the fallopian tubes are open, whether ovulation can occur, sperm findings, age, medical history, and personal goals.

IUI does not repair blocked tubes or create eggs. A clinician may use a Tubal Dye Test to assess the tubes and may recommend Ovulation Induction when ovulation is irregular. IVF is another treatment option when IUI is unlikely to address the main barrier.

A fertility assessment usually reviews both partners where relevant, including menstrual history, ovulation, semen analysis, and tubal openness. Ask how ovulation will be monitored, whether medication is advised, and what the insemination appointment involves. Share previous treatment, surgery, infections, and medicines with the team.

Contact the clinic for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, faintness, or breathing difficulty after treatment. Seek advice promptly if you are concerned about a reaction to fertility medicine or have a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding.

Ask: What factor is IUI intended to address? Are my tubes open? Will I need ovulation medication? How will sperm be prepared? When would IVF or another approach be considered?
