What does earache feel like with sinusitis?

The discomfort may seem deep inside the ear or spread from the cheek, temple or jaw. It can become more noticeable when bending forward, coughing or swallowing. A blocked nose, facial pressure, thick nasal mucus and reduced sense of smell may occur at the same time.

Inflammation and congestion in the nose and sinuses can interfere with the passage that balances pressure between the middle ear and throat. This can create fullness, popping or referred pain even when the ear itself is not infected.

Earache is not specific to sinusitis. An examination may be needed when pain is strong, one-sided, persistent or accompanied by drainage, because several ear and facial conditions can feel similar.

Rest, drink fluids and use warm humidified air if it feels soothing. Saline nasal rinsing may help some people when performed with a clean, appropriate solution. Swallowing or yawning can gently equalise pressure; avoid forceful nose blowing.

Pain relief may be suitable for some people when used according to the label and personal medical advice. Do not put drops into the ear unless a clinician has recommended them.

Arrange medical advice if earache is worsening, continues as nasal symptoms improve, or comes with hearing loss, drainage or fever. Seek urgent care for swelling around the eye, vision change, severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, facial weakness or severe dizziness.

Ask whether the pain appears to come from sinus pressure or the ear, whether the eardrum needs checking, and which nasal treatments are safe for you. Mention facial pain, dental symptoms, allergies, fever, drainage and any change in hearing.
