What does custom orthotics treat?

An orthotic insert supports or cushions specific areas of the foot inside a shoe. It may reduce arch pain, heel pain, or general foot pain when pressure, alignment, or load contributes to symptoms. Changes in foot motion can also affect forces around the kneecap, so an assessment may consider kneecap pain alongside the foot and ankle.

A custom device is shaped for your foot and intended use rather than chosen as a generic size. A biomechanical assessment, gait analysis, or 3D foot scanner may help the clinician decide its contour and firmness. An EVA foam orthotic is one possible material. Orthotics support a broader plan; they do not correct every structural problem or replace treatment for injury, inflammation, or nerve symptoms.

Take the shoes you use most often to the assessment and mention work, sport, standing demands, and previous inserts. Wear the device for gradually longer periods as advised, checking for rubbing, pressure points, or worsening pain. Bring it back for adjustment if it changes your walking or causes new symptoms, and combine it with prescribed strength, mobility, or load-management exercises.

Arrange prompt assessment for sudden severe foot pain, inability to bear weight, marked swelling after injury, new numbness, a cold or discoloured foot, or an open wound. Stop using an insert and seek advice if it causes persistent skin damage or rapidly increasing pain.

What movement or pressure pattern are we trying to change, and how will we measure progress? Which shoes will fit, how long should adaptation take, and when should the device be reviewed?
