What does cervical screening test treat?

During screening, a clinician collects cells from the cervix. The sample may show HPV Infection or cell changes that need follow-up; it does not diagnose every cause of bleeding or pelvic pain. A result can also be reassuring while symptoms still need a separate examination.

Further assessment may include an HPV Test, repeat screening, or Colposcopy, which examines the cervix more closely and may include a biopsy. Cervical Ectropion is one possible non-cancerous cause of bleeding, while Cervical Cancer requires diagnostic assessment rather than screening alone.

Attend the follow-up recommended with your result and keep the appointment even if you feel well. Ask what the result means, whether repeat testing is needed, and whether you should avoid anything before the next sample. Screening is preventive checking, not a procedure that removes abnormal cells.

Seek medical assessment for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods or after menopause, unusual discharge, persistent pelvic pain, or pain during sex. Do not wait for your next screening appointment if symptoms are new, repeated, or worsening.
