What should you know about a Welch Allyn ECG machine?

During an ECG, adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest and limbs while you lie still. Wires carry the electrical signals to the machine, which displays and prints a tracing. The clinician looks at heart rate, rhythm, and the pattern of electrical conduction.

An ECG is a brief snapshot and a normal tracing does not explain every episode of palpitations or chest discomfort. Movement, shivering, loose electrodes, and skin products can add interference. Your symptoms and examination remain part of the interpretation.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and lower limbs. Avoid applying oily lotion where electrodes may be placed. Tell the clinician about chest pain, fainting, palpitations, implanted devices, or sensitive skin. Relax, breathe normally, and avoid talking or moving while the tracing is recorded.

Call emergency services for pressure or pain in the chest with breathlessness, sweating, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Seek prompt review for new palpitations, repeated fainting, or breathlessness on slight activity. Do not wait for a routine ECG if severe symptoms are happening now.

Ask whether the tracing shows a rhythm or conduction concern, whether it was affected by movement, and whether monitoring or another assessment is needed. Ask when and how you will receive the interpretation.
