Weird Freckles: What Should You Know?

Freckles are small, flat areas of increased pigment that often become more noticeable after sunlight and less noticeable when sun exposure falls. They commonly occur on exposed areas such as the face, shoulders, chest, and arms. A freckle is usually uniform in colour and has a fairly even outline, but appearance alone cannot confirm what a mark is.

An isolated spot with a new texture, irregular outline, multiple colours, or a different pattern from your other freckles should be assessed. Sun protection helps reduce darkening and limits further ultraviolet exposure.

Photograph the mark in clear, consistent lighting and compare it with nearby skin over time. Note any change in size, shape, colour, surface, sensation, bleeding, or crusting. Use protective clothing, shade, and sunscreen on exposed skin, and avoid scratching or applying harsh lightening products.

Arrange a prompt skin review for a freckle that is enlarging, developing an uneven border, showing several colours, becoming raised, bleeding, crusting, or persistently itching. An unusual solitary mark merits attention even when other freckles look unchanged.

Ask whether the mark has the features of a freckle, whether it should be photographed or tested, and what changes should trigger reassessment. If treatment is considered, ask about pigment changes, recovery, eye protection, and alternatives.
