Ways to reduce acid reflux

Short answer
Acid reflux may improve when you eat smaller meals, avoid personal triggers, stay upright after eating, raise the head of your bed, and review treatment with a clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- After meals
- Stay upright before lying down.
- Night symptoms
- Ask about raising the bed head.
Understanding reflux
Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents move back into the oesophagus, irritating its lining. It may cause burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, regurgitation, cough or difficulty sleeping. A Hiatus Hernia and excess abdominal pressure can contribute, while some foods, medicines and late meals can trigger symptoms. Repeated symptoms may represent Acid Reflux that needs a treatment plan.
Changes that may help
Notice your own triggers rather than removing many foods at once. Common triggers include large or fatty meals, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol and mint, but patterns differ. Eat slowly, leave time between eating and lying down, and consider raising the head end of the bed for night symptoms. Avoid tight clothing around the abdomen and stop smoking if relevant. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on suitable medicines and how long to use them.
When to seek care
Arrange a review if symptoms recur, disturb sleep, need frequent non-prescription medicine, or include persistent cough or unexplained weight loss. Seek urgent care for severe or new chest tightness, trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, or intense abdominal pain. Do not assume chest symptoms are reflux, particularly if they occur with breathlessness, sweating or weakness.
Questions for your doctor
Could another condition or medicine be causing my symptoms? Which treatment is suitable, and when should I take it? Do my night symptoms need further assessment?

Questions people ask
Should everyone with reflux avoid the same foods?
No. Triggers vary, so a brief symptom and food record can help identify your own pattern.
When should reflux be assessed?
Persistent, recurrent or sleep-disrupting symptoms deserve a clinical review, especially with swallowing difficulty or bleeding.
