Walking Cast for a Broken Leg: What to Know

How the structures involved in Ankle Fracture differ from normal

Short answer

A walking cast for a broken leg protects the healing bone, but you should bear weight only as your clinician directs and use support until walking is steady.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Weight bearing
Follow the specific instruction for your fracture.
Walking aid
Use crutches or a frame until advised otherwise.
Cast care
Keep it dry and never insert objects inside.

What a walking cast means

A cast holds the injured area in a controlled position so bone and surrounding soft tissues can heal. The word walking does not always mean full weight bearing: some casts are paired with crutches or a frame, while others allow gradual loading through a special sole. Your fracture location, stability, swelling and follow-up examination determine the plan. A [Fracture Casting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/fracture-casting/) page explains the general purpose of casting.

Expect stiffness, reduced muscle strength and some swelling after the cast is removed. These changes do not by themselves show that healing has failed. Pain that is increasing rather than settling, or a cast that becomes loose, wet or damaged, needs clinical advice.

Walking and cast care

Follow the written weight-bearing instruction exactly. Keep the cast dry, inspect the skin around its edges, and elevate the leg when swelling builds up. Do not put objects inside the cast or trim its padding. Use crutches or a walking frame as demonstrated, take shorter steps, and avoid uneven ground until balance returns. Do not drive unless your treating team confirms that you can control the vehicle safely. A [Walking Boot Immobilisation](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/walking-boot-immobilisation/) page may help you understand an alternative form of support.

Keep every review appointment. Imaging and examination help the team decide when the cast, walking aid or activity level can change. Rehabilitation may be useful after immobilisation; see [Post-Operative Rehabilitation](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/post-operative-rehabilitation/) when surgery was part of your care.

When to seek care

Contact your fracture team promptly if toes become numb, unusually cold, pale or blue, or if pain and tightness do not improve with elevation. Seek urgent help for severe pain after a new injury, sudden inability to move the toes, marked swelling, chest pain or breathlessness. A hot, foul-smelling cast or fever also warrants prompt assessment because infection can occur around a wound or beneath a cast.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: How much weight may I place through the cast? Which walking aid should I use? When can I climb stairs, bathe normally and return to work? How will healing be checked, and what should I do if the cast cracks or feels tight?

Questions people ask

Can I walk immediately in a walking cast?

Only if your clinician has allowed weight bearing. Many people need an aid and a gradual progression.

What if my cast feels too tight?

Elevate the leg and contact your fracture team, especially if pain, numbness or colour change develops.
