Vomiting and diarrhea bug: what to know

The phrase usually refers to Gastroenteritis: irritation or infection of the stomach and bowel that can cause vomiting, loose stools, cramps, nausea, and reduced appetite. Food Poisoning can cause a similar pattern after contaminated food, while Rotavirus Infection is another possible cause, especially when illness spreads among household or community contacts. A fever may occur, but its absence does not rule out infection.

The most useful question is whether you are keeping fluids down and passing urine. Dry mouth, intense thirst, dark urine, dizziness, unusual sleepiness, or worsening weakness can signal dehydration. Severe localised abdominal pain, blood in stool or vomit, or symptoms that do not fit a simple stomach illness need medical assessment.

Rest and take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. After vomiting eases, eat modest portions of plain foods and increase gradually as tolerated. Keep separate towels, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, and clean bathroom surfaces because stomach infections can spread easily. Stay away from food preparation for others while you are actively unwell.

Track the start time, vomiting and stool episodes, fluid intake, urine, temperature, pain, and any exposure to illness or unusual food. Avoid alcohol and rich meals. Do not take anti-diarrhoeal medicine for bloody stools without advice. The Vomiting page covers the symptom in more detail.

Get urgent care for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, bloody vomit, blood or black stool, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt advice if urine becomes much less frequent, dizziness persists, symptoms are getting worse, or a vulnerable person such as a baby, older adult, or pregnant person is affected.

Ask how to replace fluids, whether testing or treatment is needed, how long to stay away from work or school, and which changes require urgent review. Tell the clinician about travel, sick contacts, shared meals, medicines, pregnancy possibility, and long-term health conditions.
